The 6th Annual Crystal Apple Awards

Aliso Viejo, Calif. – The sixth annual Crystal Apple Awards were held Thursday, March 20th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Aliso Viejo. This unique community event honors teachers from four local high schools (Aliso Niguel, Dana Hills, Laguna Beach, and Laguna Hills). Two teachers from each high school were chosen to receive Crystal Apples after being nominated by their students. Community members, civic leaders, school board members, and school leaders came together to see each deserving teacher receive their award.

Students nominate teachers who have inspired and motivated them by filling out a nomination form and writing a short essay. More than 700 nominations were received for this year’s awards. The teachers with the most nominations were then selected from each high school, and the students whose nominations were most memorable were selected to introduce their teacher and award the Crystal Apple.

In attendance were the principals from all four high schools; Bills Hinds (Laguna Hills High School), Deni Christensen (Aliso Niguel High School), Dr. Joshua Porter (Dana Hills High School) and Jason Alleman (Laguna Beach High School). Other distinguished guests included Laguna Niguel Mayor John Mark Jennings, along with City Council members Elaine Gennaway and Sandy Rains; Vice President Dr. Edward Wong and Amanda Morrell from the Saddleback Valley Unified School District; Assistant Superintendent Alysia Odipo from the Laguna Beach Unified School District; and Amy Hanacek from the Capistrano Unified School District.

After some inspiring words from President Matt Miller, the evening ended with two uplifting numbers from the Dana Hills choir, led by Ray Medina. Apple pie was served following the program, and guests mingled and congratulated the winning teachers.

Here are the 2019 Crystal Apple Award Winners:

Somer Selway grew up in Ogden, Utah and first learned about ceramics when she was a student at Capo High School. She received her BFA in Art and then went on to receive a Masters in Education. She has been teaching at Laguna Beach High School for six years. Bella Fonk first took Ms. Selway’s Ceramics class as a sophomore, where she saw the way Ms. Selway cares about each of her students. One student remarked, “Ms. Selway has impacted each of our lives inside and outside the classroom. She assures me how much faith she has in my ability. Not only does she believe in me, but she makes me believe in myself.”

Valorie Quigley was raised in Overland Park, Kansas where she was inspired by a high school teacher to go on to teach Math. She attended the University of Kansas where she received a Masters in Mathematics Education and has taught at Laguna Beach High School for the last 24 years. Molly Cohn nominated Mrs. Quigley after taking AP Calculus. She said. “Thank you for believing in me during times even I didn’t. Your positivity and teaching changed me as not only a student, but also as a person. I will be forever grateful for the impact you have made on my life.”

Jake Schwartzberg is originally from Tucson, Arizona. After attending the University of Arizona, he decided to become a teacher, and has taught Math at Dana Hills High School for the past 17 years. Two years ago, he created the Coming Together for Children in Need Foundation (CTCN) which raises funds for the special needs program at Dana Hills. He was nominated by senior Emily Burrows who said, “I think the thing that really sets Mr. Schwartzberg apart from other teachers is his enthusiasm and passion in everything he does. He always makes an effort to know his students and, in return, we get to know him. His dedication towards bettering the Dana Hills’ special needs program is evident through the long hours of hard work he pours into advocating and fundraising for his foundation.”

Rebecca Reid grew up in New Jersey and California and attended San Diego State University. She has been teaching Biology at Dana Hills for 15 years. Mrs. Reid decided to go into teaching after her Marine Ecology teacher Mr. Stoppa inspired her to want to help students see how fun science can be. She was nominated for a Crystal Apple by Evie Wettengel, who said, “Mrs. Reid is one of my favorite teachers I’ve ever had. She is so patient with all of our many, sometimes unnecessary questions, and never fails to put a smile on my face with her exciting stories, jokes, and ugly Christmas sweaters.”

Cyndi Wright was raised in Laguna Beach, California and graduated from Laguna Beach High School. She went to college at UCLA and earned her Masters in Psychology at Pepperdine University. She has been teaching for over 30 years, working at Aliso Niguel High School for the past 16 years. Mrs. Wright was nominated by senior Audrey McKeon, who commented, “The influence of a good teacher makes all the difference and that is 100% true when it comes to Mrs. Wright. She understands and connects with the students she teaches, but she doesn’t just teach students, she makes you feel like she is giving advice to friends. She makes everyone feel loved, appreciated and all while teaching arguably the most interesting class on campus.

Gregory Burger is originally from Mission Viejo, California. Mr. Burger went to college at Humboldt State University, and received his teaching credential at Cal State Fullerton. His goal is to give students an opportunity to have their own opinions and an ability to think for themselves. He has been teaching English for the last four years at Aliso Niguel. Sophomore Emily Ellsworth said, “I nominated Mr. Burger for a Crystal Apple Award because he goes out of his way to make sure his students understand what is being taught and he helps each of us to do our very best. He has a good rapport with teenagers because he treats us with respect, relates to us, and develops bonds with each of us.”

Alison Leigber grew up in a military family, so she has lived in many different places. Mrs. Liegber is truly a Hawk at heart; she attended Laguna Hills High School as a student, and even met her husband there when she was a freshman. After attending college at UCLA, she taught for six years and then took 17 years off to raise her three sons, returning to LHHS last year. Mrs. Leigber was nominated by Mackenzie Conwell who commented, “She taught me how to simplify my life while teaching transcendentalism. She taught me how to appreciate every moment as it is passing while reading Our Town. She made me realize that it is best to say things as they are and not to sugar coat the truth while analyzing Spoon River Anthology. I cannot thank her enough for everything she has done to help me live a happier and more fulfilling life.”

Lisa Palmstrom grew up in Laguna Hills and attended college at Cal State Fullerton. She has been teaching for 7 years. Mrs. Palmstrom tells her students that her goal is to be genuine and to use what she has learned from her own challenges and experiences to help her students succeed. She was nominated by student Amanda Goda who said, “High school can be a tough place, but Mrs. Palmstrom’s classroom feels welcoming and safe. She lets us express ourselves and our opinion is valued. Whether we are debating the article of the week or we get side tracked in discussing the latest “hot” issue, one can be assured that their voice is heard and their opinions valued.”

Word of Wisdom

“Don’t drink, don’t smoke, what do you do?,” is a question often asked to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in regards to abstaining from alcohol, tobacco and other addictive substances. Members of the Church (known as Latter-day Saints, but often referred to as Mormons) might explain that this is part of a commandment called the Word of Wisdom. Nonetheless, the Word of Wisdom is so much more than avoiding certain drinks or substances.

In the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 6:19 it reads:

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”

Before we came to earth, we lived with God as spirits. When we learned as much as we could, we were sent to earth to receive a body to further progress. Our bodies are sacred gifts from God, our Heavenly Father, and after we die and are resurrected - our bodies will be perfected and united back with our spirits. It is this knowledge that enables Latter-day Saints to strive to take care of their bodies which are the temples of their spirits. When we take care of our bodies, it strengthens us physically and spiritually, so we can be our best selves to support the rigors of life, make important choices, serve our fellow man and all other matters that come our way.

The Word of Wisdom was revealed to the prophet Joseph Smith on February 27, 1833 - well before the medical community knew the harmful effects of tobacco and alcohol! It can be found in Doctrine & Covenants section 89. However, not only has God revealed harmful substances, but there is also a focus on what we should be doing to strengthen and take care of our bodies. We are commanded to eat healthy foods in season, partake of meat sparingly and we are promised spiritual as well as physical blessings from following the Word of Wisdom.

More recently, prophets of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have counseled us to avoid illegal drugs, abstain from abusing prescription drugs, avoid over-eating, get the appropriate amount of sleep, exercise regularly and fast for two meals once a month - all of which help us to master our appetites and be in control of ourselves.

Christmas Chalk Walk 2018

Aliso Viejo, Calif. – One of Orange County’s favorite Christmas traditions was back for a fifth year as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted the 2018 Christmas Chalk Walk on Friday and Saturday night (Dec. 14-15).

More than 500 artists participated in the festive event, including students from St. Anne Middle School, Kaiser Elementary, AME Church, and many more individuals, families and groups.

The holiday affair entertained visitors of all ages as 4,000 people attended the two-day affair, enjoying art, complimentary cinnamon rolls & hot chocolate, holiday music and mingling with other patrons. Guests traveled from as far as Utah and other parts of California, in addition to local community members.

Christmas Chalk Walk organizer, Kristen Kamerman, remarked, “God created each of us with amazing gifts and talents. Mix those all together, sprinkled with lots of love and you have the 2018 Christmas Chalk Walk! A true masterpiece! Thank you for helping us to Light the World! God be with you until we meet again.”

Youth from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated in a live nativity as more than 50 young men and young women stood in as Mary, Joseph, angels, shepherds and wise men alternating during the two nights.

Creative talent was on display each evening from the beautiful chalk craftsmanship to the musical prowess delivered by the Aliso Viejo Singers Co, Zach Gibson, Catherine Clegg, The Wool Covers, Brooke Wilkins, Payton Aurora, Lauren Kimball, Adella Melon, and Nikki Lloyd. There was a Saturday night surprise when a large flash mob, led by Victoria Groskreutz, astounded guests with a smartly choreographed dance to Christmas songs.

Many city officials were on hand including Mayor Ross Chun (Aliso Viejo), Mayor Carol Moore (Laguna Woods), Mayor John Mark Jennings (Laguna Niguel), Mayor Pro Tem Paul Wyatt (Dana Point) and City Councilman Don Sedgwick (Laguna Hills) who all presented their Mayor’s Choice Award for their favorite chalk art piece.

A special thank you goes out to Kamerman’s amazing “Dream Team” that work tirelessly throughout the year to put on an amazing community event, and Handel’s Ice Cream, Sabrosada, Baja Fish, Circus Trix and Big Air Trampoline Park who all donated prizes and food.

Courageous Compassion

On September 27, 2018, civic, faith, and community leaders joined together for Mayor Elaine Gennawey’s Breakfast of Compassion hosted by the Laguna Niguel Interfaith Council. The morning focused on the rising problem of homelessness in Orange County and how we can join together to lift and care for those in need. Rick Lamprecht, an interfaith representative from The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shared, “My lasting impression from attending the Laguna Niguel Interfaith breakfast was not so much a specific thought or message, but an overall feeling of a commitment to faith and doing good by all in attendance. I felt the spirit uniting us in a common good, as we spoke about God, in whatever form, and helping and serving our neighbor in need.” Prayers and reflections were offered by Rabbi Heather Miller of Temple Beth El, Chaplain Andrew Hoyle of the United States Marine Core, President Brian Neff of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mayor Elaine Gennawey, Senator Pat Bates, Family Assistance Ministries, South County Outreach, Iman Taraq Ata from the O.C. Islamic Foundation, Niloufar Gibson from the Baha’i of Laguna Niguel, and Pastor Jim Szeyller from Laguna Niguel Presbyterian. Beth Garlock, President of the Laguna Niguel Stake Women’s organization commented, “I thought it was wonderful to look around the room and see all of the many faith groups represented: Jewish, Muslim, Baha’i, and Christian. We were all there to support one another and to unite our efforts in caring for those in need.”

Among the many highlights of the morning included the story of one mother’s escape from domestic violence and her plight of homelessness with three children. Desperate and afraid, she exhausted every avenue available in the county until Family Assistance Ministries was able to provide shelter, food, and basic necessities for her family. Working with F.A.M., she now hopefully walks the long journey toward self-reliance. Her story was disheartening and sobering for many in attendance, but sadly not new to the civic leaders and clergy present. The Federal Housing and Urban Development Department estimates the number of homeless statewide at 130,000 on any given night. That’s 25 percent of the entire nation’s homeless population. Since 2016, California experienced a larger increase in homelessness than any other state. Faced with the growing number of homeless in our local communities, countless cities and churches have scrambled to provide solutions and a positive way forward.

Many citizens in the community struggle with compassion towards the displaced men and women camped on street corners. Pastor Jim Szeyller from Laguna Niguel Presbyterian concluded the morning by challenging those in attendance to have more than just compassion, to demonstrate “Courageous Compassion.” The way forward requires courage. It requires us to look beyond the dirty, ragged appearance, and sometimes course mannerisms and speech of our disparate traveling neighbors. It requires us to reach out and help regardless of fear, ignorance, or judgment, and put aside our preconceived notions about how, or why our fellow human beings arrived in their present condition. We must find “Courageous Compassion” within ourselves to move forward because thousands of lives literally depend upon it.

"Saints: The Standard of Truth" - Have you read it?!!

REMEMBER.

In the Book of Mormon, Moroni 10:3 it reads, “Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder in your hearts.”

Just as we are reminded in the Book of Mormon to remember all that the Lord has done for us, “Saints: The Standard of Truth” can help us remember the heritage of faith and endurance, of those that came before us, in the gospel.

Elder Quentin L. Cook, member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, commented on the creation of the series, “We feel that having a total picture that is transparent and tells the whole story, tells true accounts, that seen in context, almost everything will be faith-promoting and build faith. So many things have been taken out of context, and seen as in a minuscule way. This now allows a complete picture that we think will bless the lives of the rising generation and our generation, even those of us that are older.” (click here for the full story)

Laguna Hills, Calif. — Aloha! The message was simple and awesome, everyone was welcome! The Laguna Niguel Stake Family Luau was an afternoon and evening of pure delight on Saturday (Sept. 22). Over 1,200 members of the Laguna Niguel Stake, their friends and family, neighbors, and community members gathered for delicious food and exciting entertainment.

So Cal Events provided the Hawaiian cuisine along with traditional hula dancers and a spectacular fire show! Members of the local fire department were on hand (not that the fire show needed them) but to accept a gift basket and thank you cards that guests made at the start of the luau. This went along with the JustServe booth which collected more than $3,000 worth of gift cards for victims of the Redding fire, from this past destructive fire season. Hundreds of baby wipes and diapers were also donated for local refugees.

Along with the fantastic food, entertainment and service, young women from the stake spotlighted our new stake presidency with fun pictures and fascinating facts about them. The night was capped off with a viewing of “Moana” on the big screen! The event was remarkably hosted by Bruce Chang as DJ, who always does an incredible job of setting the tone of a party. Kristen Kamerman and her crew wonderfully created an event to unite the community.

Kristen reflected, “The goal is to unite the stake, fellowship the members and be a beacon in the community. We can follow Christ and have fun!”

She certainly achieved that, as many people in the park felt welcomed to participate. Thank you to everyone that helped to make the Laguna Niguel Stake Luau a success!

Temple Garments

The world is familiar with different religious apparel worn by men and women of many different faiths. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is generally not known for public religious apparel, but faithful adult members that make sacred promises to God's commandments and the gospel of Jesus Christ in LDS temples, wear a garment under their clothing that symbolizes their commitment to these promises (which are also referred to as covenants).

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are often asked about their "Mormon underwear." To some it may seem unusual, but it is a physical expression of fidelity to God that is also found in the book of Exodus 29:4-9; 21 in the Old Testament of the Bible. The temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are the most sacred and holy places on earth. They are a sanctuary and a safe place, in an often chaotic world. The temple garments are a way to bring a "piece of the temple back home with you to remind you of your covenants," Beth Garlock (Laguna Niguel Stake member).

Temple garments are revered and cherished by those that wear them, so when they are ridiculed or made light of it can be offensive to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When talked about with respect, members welcome questions and discussion about their feelings about garments. The quotes in this post are from members in the wards (congregations) of the Laguna Niguel Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our understanding of God's commandments and the love we can find in their value, promises and protection can make them easier to follow. It is also through the practice and daily application of following commandments where we can find freedom, in what before may seem like a limitation. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints view their temple garments no differently. In what may seem like a limitation to others, the wearing of the garment provides a freedom and protection in what they represent.

Are Mormons Christians?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known by the nickname - Mormons, and both can be answered "no!"

Another common question has a different answer. "Are Mormons Christian?" The answer is emphatically "yes!" Mormons worship Jesus Christ. Mormons have the same basic beliefs as most Christians, with a few significant differences:

Mormons believe Jesus Christ is part of the Godhead

The Articles of Faith are 13 statements that explain the basic doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first one is - "We believe in God the Father; His Son, Jesus Christ; and the Holy Ghost.

Many Christian denominations believe in the Holy Trinity - three Gods in one, or God without form. Mormons believe they are three distinct individuals, but united in purpose. God, the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ have perfect physical bodies while the Holy Ghost is a spirit. In fact, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pray to God, the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ. They worship Jesus Christ as a member of the Godhead.

Mormons believe in Christ's established Church

Following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the authority in His Church was gradually lost and changed. Many Christian denominations descended from these early beginnings of Christianity and created some of their own traditions and changes. Rather than being a "reformed" church from these traditions, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a restored church that Jesus Christ reestablished on earth with direct priesthood authority and living prophets and apostles.

If God sent prophets to lead and guide people anciently, wouldn't He still see the need for prophets for people living in modern times? Yes. Jesus Christ has called prophets and apostles who have been given authority to speak God's words and lead Jesus Christ's Church.

It is proof that God loves ALL His children and it gives witness of the resurrected Jesus Christ.

Hi y’all! My name is Carina Novillo and I am in the Wood Canyon Ward! I was born in Kazakhstan and lived in an orphanage there for the first year of my life. When I was one year old, I was fortunate enough to be adopted by two of the most Christ-like parents ever! Kazakhstan is a country in the Asian Continent right under Russia and next to China. It was the last country to break away from the Soviet Union in December of 1991. In most parts of the country it still looks like 1950’s Soviet rule. Everyone still lives in communist constructed buildings and there are still buildings and offices from when the Soviet’s were ruling Kazakhstan. Due to the lack of money in the country, nothing has been done about this. The Kazakh people are still healing from the Soviets. Despite all this, Kazakhstan is one the most loving and happiest countries I have ever visited.

Two months ago I had the opportunity to go back and visit my homeland which was the most amazing experience ever for me. I was able to really dive into my heritage and learn so much more about me and where I come from. I would love to share this journey with all of you because it was absolutely amazing! So let’s get started!!!

So on April 28th, 2018 we (me, my sister, my mom and my dad) arrived in Astana, which is the capital of Kazakhstan. This day was a little extra special to me because it was my 18th birthday! It was so amazing to be in the country where I was born on my birthday. When we landed I could not stop smiling, I was actually here!!!Through some friends, we met a very kind family who were also LDS and worked in Kazakhstan! They were so kind and loving and picked us up from the airport and gave us a little tour of Astana! Such a beautiful city!!! For my birthday lunch I got to try horse meat which is a Kazakh delicacy! I have to admit it was not that bad!

We were so jetlagged that we went to bed like around 4:00 that afternoon and did not wake up until the next day! Kazakhstan is 13 hours ahead of California so we were pretty wiped out but only that first day which was a miracle! Coming back home though and getting used to the time change was a whole different story.

The next day was Sunday, so we had the opportunity to go to church there! They have an LDS church in Kazakhstan. A few months before, President Nelson had come and visited Kazakhstan in the same branch we went to while we were there!!! How awesome is that!!! The Saints there are some of the most wonderful and faithful people I have ever met. They have such strong testimonies of our Savior Jesus Christ and love Heavenly Father with all their hearts and want to serve Him with everything they’ve got. It is so cool that wherever you go in the world, the Church is the same and though you may not understand the language they are speaking, you are able to understand the feeling of truth and the Spirit that is felt in all those meetings. I truly love this Gospel with all my heart and have such a strong testimony of it.

While we were in Kazakhstan I was able to meet so many people there which was one of my favorite parts of the trip! To see a whole country look like me was incredibly special! The people of Kazakhstan are some of the kindest people ever! And it’s not just a few that are like that but the whole country! Their personalities are gentle and loving! They walk around the street just smiling or in a happy mood and they want to serve anyone they meet! They also love giving people hugs and it does not matter if you’ve known them for 2 seconds or your whole life they are going to give you the biggest hug ever and just love you up!

People would think I was a native and would approach me and start talking to me in Kazakh. I would have to say, “Sorry I only speak English!” and they would look at me puzzled and point at their face and then point at mine and say “Kazakh!”, questioning, you are Kazakh so why do you not speak it? To the best of my abilities, I would try to explain that, yes, I was 100% Kazakh but that I lived in the United States and only speak English. I wanted so badly to communicate with them and wished I had taken Kazakh back home but maybe when I go back I will be able to talk to them in their native tongue!

A few days after we arrived in Astana, we took a 2 hour train ride south to Karaganda which is my hometown! Let me tell y’all the emotions were really strong when we arrived. It felt like a piece of me had come home! In a way, this is my home, it’s where I was born and it’s where my bloodline comes from. Our translator, named Larisa, came to pick us up from the train station. Fun fact, Larisa was also my parents translator and guide 17 years ago when they came to adopt me. So it was awesome to see her again.

The next day was the first day of May which is a holiday in Kazakhstan called May Day or Friendship Day! There's lots of dancing and festive going on that celebrate Kazakhstan and the all the people there! It was such a fun day!!!

While in Karaganda I was able to go to a school and speak to kids my age about what life and school is like is the United States! They were able to ask questions and I had so much fun answering them! They were all so sweet!!! I made 20 new best friends which was the best thing ever!!!

On the second to last day of our trip we went back to the orphanage which was my home for the first year of my life. The same two doctors and director of the orphanage that took care of me when I was in the orphanage are still working there. So it was so special to see them again after 17 years. I was able to tell them about how my life is in America and how I am doing! They were so happy to see me again and vise versa. It was such a full circle being able to walk through those halls and going to the room where I once lived. I was able to hold sweet babies and tell them how much they are loved. I was able to learn more about me and also be reassured that I came from a good orphanage that is filled with so much love.

I am so grateful for my experience and opportunity to go to Kazakhstan. I was able to learn a lot about myself and where I come from. I was able to see how my Heavenly Father loves me and how my Savior Jesus Christ loves me. I was able to fully know that I am a beloved daughter of God and that He has a glorious plan for me. I was able to see how He has orchestrated my life so beautifully. I am so proud to be Kazakh but I am also so proud to be an American citizen. I didn't understand before I went, but I now realize, how blessed I am to live in the United States where it’s called Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. I am so grateful! I just wanted you all to know that we have a loving Heavenly Father who is aware of us and I promise you we are never out of His sight! And I know this to be true with all of my heart.

Laguna Niguel Stake Seniors Move on to College Athletics

Dedication, commitment and drive describes five seniors from the Laguna Niguel Stake who have been successful in their young athletic lives to move on to compete at the collegiate level. Through sacrifice and the support of their families, these awesome youth have risen to the top of competitive play. Let’s meet them!

Sawyer Chesely is a member of the Laguna Beach Ward and plans to play baseball at Harvard University. Sawyer started when his parents signed him up for t-ball at the ripe young age of six. He loves that the game is always different and never throws the same situation at you. Sawyer has had many successes, but his top moments were winning MVP (most valuable player) and being victorious in the National High School Invitational in North Carolina (where 16 of the top teams across the country compete in a single elimination tournament) during his junior year at Orange Lutheran High School. He looks forward to advancing in baseball and attending the college he loves, but first he will be heading out on an LDS Mission serving in Viña del Mar, Chile.

Bella Folino is a member of the Wood Canyon Ward and will be competing at Brigham Young University on the women’s soccer team. Her dad coached Bella when she started at age four and quickly moved on to competitive club teams a couple of years later. She loves everything about the game especially the competitiveness, camaraderie amongst teammates and feeling part of a team. It has shaped her into who she is today! She has had to sacrifice a lot of church activities through the years, but that provided her with many missionary opportunities that she is thankful for. Her favorite moments from high school include winning league all years she played at Aliso Niguel High School and scoring the winning goal in CIF playoffs against Santa Margarita High School. Bella was also selected to participate in the US Women’s National Team U18 camp! She can’t wait to compete at the highest level and represent her school while being supported by family and friends.

Max McKhann is a member of the Dana Hills Ward and will be competing in track & field at Stanford University. His events are the hammer and discus. Max’s foray into Track & Field started auspiciously enough as his PE teacher did not believe he belonged in that class and led him to the track & field team. He found his place and successfully competed all four years. Max loves the team atmosphere of his sport, where everyone is trying to improve together, but “at the end of the day only you are responsible for your performance.” His favorite moment includes winning the Orange County Championship his senior year at Dana Hills High School in discus, and then watching his teammates break the school record in the 4x400 relay. Max looks forward to the training and coaching Stanford can provide to help him reach his full potential.

Maile Powell is a member of the Laguna Hills Ward and will be competing in volleyball at the University of Hawai’i Hilo. Maile takes after her dad, who is a beach volleyball player, and introduced her to the sport she now loves and has been playing for seven years. She loves the game and the culture of volleyball. Maile also relishes the team aspect of the game while working to better her individual skills as a player. Her favorite moment competing at Laguna Hills High School was going undefeated in league during her freshman year. Maile eagerly awaits being trained and playing at the collegiate level. Playing at Hawai’i, she will have the opportunity and looks forward to traveling to many different colleges to compete.

Jack Sterner is also a member of the Dana Hills Ward and will be playing baseball at Brigham Young University. Sports is in his family’s blood and he started baseball at the tender age of six while playing many others sports, as well. When he got to high school, he decided to focus primarily on baseball. Jack loves the competition and the one-on-one battles, especially when he’s pitching. He also enjoys the mental aspect of the game. Jack’s favorite moment from his time at Dana Hills High School was competing in the National High School Invitational in North Carolina his junior year, where his school met up with Sawyer Chesley’s school for the championship game. He loved being part of the great atmosphere with players from all over the country. Jack looks forward to competing at a Division I school with his brother Justin (who is also on the baseball team), representing BYU and to help contribute to the success of the program. His final words, “Go Cougs!”

As you can see, these athletes have all had different experiences but a similar way to achieve their goals – hard work! We wish them all the best as they move forward in their next endeavors!

A new Stake presidency is called

Aliso Viejo, Calif. - The Laguna Niguel Stake sustained a new stake presidency on Sunday (May 6) at Stake Conference. Visiting General Authority, Elder Craig C. Christensen, a member of the Presidency of the Seventy, and Elder Kyle S. McKay, also a General Authority Seventy, released Robert Davis (President), Richard Lamprecht (First Counselor) and Allen Ostergar (Second Counselor) after nine years of lovingly serving the members of the Laguna Niguel Stake. The members of the stake are grateful to President Davis, his counselors and their families for the sacrifice, time and love they have devoted for these many years.

Elder Christensen and Elder McKay called and the Laguna Niguel Stake members sustained Blaine Evanson as Stake President, Matt Miller as First Counselor and Brian Neff as Second Counselor. President and Sister Robin Evanson and their family have lived in the Laguna Niguel Stake for nearly two years. They recently moved from South Pasadena with their four children. President Evanson grew up in Naperville, Illinois and Sandy, Utah while Sister Evanson grew up in Anaheim, Calif. They both attended BYU and President Evanson attended Columbia Law School to become a practicing attorney while Sister Evanson is a Registered Nurse.

President Miller and Sister Patrice Miller have lived in the Laguna Stake for 18 years with their four children. President Miller grew up in Orange County (Fountain Valley) while Sister Miller hails from Orem, Utah. They both attended BYU where Sister Miller got a degree in Special Education and became a teacher while President Miller went on to UCLA Dental School to become a dentist.

President and Sister Neff are also fairly new to the stake as of two and a half years. They both grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah and attended the University of Utah. President Neff has worked in advertising agencies his entire adult life while Sister Neff designs sea-glass jewelry. They enjoy their four children and two grandchildren.

Stake Conference was a wonderful meeting with the releasing and sustaining process of our Stake Presidencies. We were honored to hear wonderful testimonies of love, service and Jesus Christ from the outgoing Stake Presidency, new Stake Presidency and our visiting General Authority.

From Convert to Missionary: Logan Stites

During his freshman year at Aliso Niguel High School, Logan Stites was invited to go to seminary by Kaylee Hepburn; who is a member of the Laguna Niguel Ward currently serving a mission in Montreal, Canada. From this invitation, Logan began attending seminary on his own throughout his high school years and began attending Wood Canyon Ward activities and eventually began going to church. I got to know Elder Stites very well since he was one of my husband, Matt’s, Priests in the Young Men’s Program. He hung out at our house a lot and he became like an extended member of the family. In January 2016, he was baptized a member of the church and after one year and one month, he left to serve his mission in Houston, Texas. Elder Stites was super excited to go to Houston, but his initial few months were pretty tough. It was hot, it was humid, he got attacked by mosquitos, and he served in a Single Adult ward where nothing was happening. I could tell from his letters that he was frustrated. But recently he was transferred to a new area and I can tell he is much happier and is feeling the spirit. When I asked him about the saving power of Jesus Christ and how it has influenced him and others on his mission he wrote me the following:

“It all starts with the Atonement that Jesus Christ performed. What exactly is it? Well to simplify things we'll break it down to three sections: His suffering in Gethsemane, His death upon the cross, and finally His miraculous resurrection three days later. When Christ was in the Garden of Gethsemane, we learn from the Bible he "sweat great drops of blood," and the Book of Mormon goes even further to clarify that he bled from every pore. The pain was that extreme, but because he descended below all things, he was able to understand everything that we have ever gone through, and all that we will go through, with perfect exactness. He then went through one of the most brutal ways to die, but literally gave up his life for us. He "gave up the ghost." Yes they nailed him to a cross with nails, but he intentionally gave up his life, as in, literally split his spirit from his body. And because of his resurrection we too, can be resurrected. It is his free gift to the world.”

It’s amazing to me that someone who has only been a member of the church for a year and a half is able to comprehend and succinctly describe the atonement.

Logan goes on to talk about ‘Grace’ and how the Savior paid for our sins, as long as we are willing to do all that we can do. He expresses his appreciation for Christ, and sacrificing for us. For his faith to not give up on us. He ends with an experience from his mission:

“A miracle that I love seeing is how Christ can influence other's lives. One of our recent converts named Donna has had a great experience with his saving power. Donna has done a lot of things in the past that she knows now to be wrong, and has really regretted it. She wasn't sure if there was forgiveness, if there was any hope. Her situation even now is bad. But as we began to teach her, her eyes were opened to a whole new world. She learned that she could always be forgiven of her sins. That there is no sin too great that Christ has not already bled for. She was so thankful for Christ and his sacrifice, and sought to become clean, to not waste his eternal and infinite atonement. As she entered the waters of baptism she was crying, knowing what it all meant. She would be born anew, a new creature in Christ. A sister in His restored Church. She is so thankful for all that has been given to her and has seen the miraculous blessings that have come because she has followed Jesus Christ. She is still going through hard times, but her faith does not waiver. She may get discouraged, and Satan may attempt to bombard her with different things, but in the end Christ's strength, His grace is able to help her keep afloat. I know that Christ understands all of us, no matter what. And there is nothing we can do, or have done, that will change that. Is God probably disappointed in us sometimes? Most definitely. Does He stop loving us? No. His love is infinite, unchanging. Christ lives, God reigns supreme, and their love for us will allow us to be with those we love for all time and eternity.”

Elder Stites once told me that as a kid, he was very unathletic. He failed in all sports and was very uncoordinated. In middle school he started running and a few years later with persistence and training he became one of the top cross country runners in Aliso Niguel history holding records in several categories. Once Elder Stites puts his mind to something, he faithfully works at it, develops it, and is unwavering in his determination. I love reading Elder Stites’ letters and can see how his testimony is being strengthened week by week. Like his running, he is transforming and becoming a strong and stalwart missionary. In fact, he was recently called to be a district leader. And while he jokes that this new responsibility is a train wreck waiting to happen, that is just Elder Stites being humble and we all know that he will be successful in this new role and will continue to change the lives of those he meets.

Aliso Viejo, Calif. – The fifth annual Crystal Apple Awards were held last Thursday (Mar. 22) at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the Laguna Niguel Stake Center in Aliso Viejo. Community members, students, teachers, civic leaders and school leaders from Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel came together to celebrate eight teachers from four local high schools (Aliso Niguel, Dana Hills, Laguna Beach and Laguna Hills).

Students nominated teachers that inspire and motivate them, and from those nominations students were selected to present the award to the teacher. Recipients included Dan Bornfeld and Douglas Mack (Aliso Niguel), Jeri Garcia and Gail Stirtz (Dana Hills), Mark Alvarez and Lara Greco (Laguna Beach), Mary Belfield and Michelle Carmo (Laguna Hills). The students each conveyed the impact and meaning the teachers have on them and their daily student life.

“She treats her students like family,” remarked student Teyo Jacobson with regards to teacher, Michelle Carmo.

The feeling palpated throughout the room that these teachers are having a meaningful and lasting impact upon the students.

“You can always count on him to have a solution to any problem,” reflected Weston Bowcutt regarding Douglas Mack.

The educators, in turn, had the chance to say a few words when accepting the award. It was obvious to the audience, they held their students in high regard and love what they do.

“I believe in them. They are the complete opposite of the millennial stereotype. They are brilliant, caring, creative and empathetic. I am not just their teacher, I am part of their village,” reflected teacher, Jeri Garcia.

The evening ended with a heartfelt conferment of an Honorary Crystal Apple Award to the late Ray Woods (Dana Hills High School Choir Director), which was accepted on his family’s behalf by Nathan Langdon. Mr. Woods had been instrumental in having his Blue Lantern Vocal Jazz Ensemble perform at all of the previous Crystal Apple Awards. He was a dedicated musician and teacher and is missed greatly at Dana Hills High School.

The Blue Lantern Vocal Jazz Ensemble, led by Ray Medina, capped off the program with their beautiful harmonies and renditions of two musical numbers.

Guests mingled and enjoyed apple pie, following the program, with teachers congratulated and students inspired.

Other guests included Leisa Winston (Laguna Beach Unified Assistant Superintendent), Jan Vickers (Laguna Beach Unified School Board President), Judy Bullockus and Gary Pritchard(Capistrano Unified Board of Trustees), Amanda Morrell (Saddleback Valley Unified School District President), Mel Carruth (Laguna Hills Mayor), Ross Chun (Aliso Viejo Mayor Pro Tem), Bills Hinds (Laguna Hills High School Principal), Deni Christensen (Aliso Niguel High School Principal), Dr. Joshua Porter (Dana Hills High School Principal) and Nikol King (Laguna Beach High School Assistant Principal).

Meet Ann Richardson

Ann and John Richardson moved to Laguna Beach in 1997, settling into a Myrtle Street home designed and built by John’s parents back in 1963. A member of the LDS Church, Ann loved the friendly coziness of the Laguna Beach Ward. It was a fun place, she recalls, where if you accidentally forgot your sweater, you could find it the next Sunday just where you had left it.

Homelessness is perhaps one of our society’s greatest challenges, and some claim that no city has done more, on a per capita basis, than Laguna Beach. Compassionate people of good will, mostly members of the various churches, but especially St Mary’s Episcopal Church, have reached out to provide help. From this a number of organizations have been formed and Ann has been part of this: “As a homemaker I was instantly available and easily gravitated to these groups of willing workers.”

A volunteer by nature, she leapt at the opportunity to make cookies by the dozens for the homeless lunches given out by Family Assistance Ministries, a homeless prevention agency serving south Orange County. Her bishop next called her to represent the ward in Laguna’s Ecumenical Council (later renamed the Interfaith Council) where she has served for the past twenty years. Besides the Interfaith Council, Ann has served with ‘Café Pacifica’ (there was no ‘café’, just churches serving dinners to the homeless at Heisler Park), Laguna Relief (a response to the Laguna fire of 1993, which evolved to the ‘Resource Center’), the Alternate Sleeping Location (ASL, a city-sponsored service for the homeless), the Friendship Shelter (a remarkable organization dedicated to helping the homeless return to self-sufficiency), and Laguna Pantry (a distributor of donated food whose service has grown through good management).

Ann’s service to these groups—her ‘‘Laguna Beach occupation”, as she terms it—has been a labor of love. She has most often served as the volunteer coordinator. Tom Thorkelson, vice president of the Orange County Interfaith Network, describes Ann as “A person of great compassion... and a great organizer who accepts and appreciates people of all faiths.” Ann became addicted to this service, she says, “because these volunteers are the nicest people in the world.” As Ann referred to these good people, she was moved to tears.

Ann provided the information for this review of her service, but mostly spoke of the organizations that evolved out of need. But that is Ann—forget about getting her to estimate the thousands of hours served. She is, as always, a meek and humble giver who works behind the scene, ever elusive of the spotlight. She turned eighty at her last birthday and health challenges are now part of her life, but she soldiers on doing all she can. 2017 Christmas Chalk Walk

Aliso Viejo, Calif. — The 4th annual Christmas Chalk Walk, hosted by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Laguna Niguel Stake, delighted revelers of all ages with beautiful art, festive music & nativity, inspiring community camaraderie and delicious treats on Friday and Saturday night (Dec. 15-16). More than 200 artists participated in the 2017 Chalk Walk which included many locals but also some from as far away as Bakersfield, San Diego, 29 Palms, Long Beach and St. George, Utah as they began their art pieces on Thursday (Dec. 14).

Thousands of guests were treated to over 2,300 cinnamon rolls and hundreds of gallons of hot chocolate along with a changing live Nativity over the two nights. Patrons strolled through the wondrous stalls to holiday tunes as well as spectacular live performances Friday and Saturday evening.

Saturday night began with Mayor Choice Awards as Mayor Dave Harrington (Aliso Viejo), Mayor Melody Carruth (Laguna Hills) and Mayor Elaine Gennawey (Laguna Niguel) presented a special accolade for their personal favorite chalk art of the event.

Mayor Genneway remarked, “My favorite part about Christmas is that it is all about the family and family can come in many different forms. The reason I chose the penguin design to receive the Laguna Niguel Mayor’s Choice Award is because I felt that it best represented the idea of Christmas and family.”

Other council members in attendance included Ross Chun (Aliso Viejo), Bill Phillips (Aliso Viejo), Mayor Pro Tem Phil Tsunoda (Aliso Viejo), and Don Sedgwick (Laguna Hills.)

The weekend’s success is due in large part to the community support, but the hours upon hours of thought, planning and work that event organizer, Kristen Kamerman, and her “Dream Team” devote to the Chalk Walk is what brings it all to life and makes it the Christmas event that everyone in the surrounding area has come to know and look forward to the each year. A huge thank you to Kristen and her team which included (but not limited to, because there were many extra helpers) Walt Hick, Leo Del Rosario, Bruce Chang, Kristin McBride, Paige and Scott Flora, ReahAnne Nobleza, Yvonne and Jeff McPherson, Trent Kamerman, Linda Zambrano, Elizabeth Muirbrook, Carrie Cook, Barbara Cook, Melissa White, Andrea Bunting, Jennifer Stewart, Lori and Dave Morse, Ken and Connie Johnson, John Thurman, Sharla and Chris Marocchi, Erik Hall, Kevin Bowcut, Ron Hoopes, Trevor Briggs and Shawn Hansen, the missionaries serving in Laguna Niguel Stake and so many others including the 48 people who helped bake! Community businesses were also amazing in their donations including CircusTrix, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Jimboy Tacos, Big Air, Baja Fish Tacos, Fresh Brother's Pizza and many more!

Kristen Kamerman reflected on the event, "The Christmas Chalk Walk is a wonderful event that brings people together of all walks of life. We are in this world together, all beloved children of our Heavenly Father, each of us have been given great gifts and talents and as we come together at this special time of year we can celebrate the spirit of Christmas and Light the World."

Light the World Kick-off Bonfire

Stake Youth Leaders lit the path with luminaries. Two bonfires were ablaze. Hot chocolate and s'mores were there, aplenty. The youth were surrounded by sounds of crackling wood, friendly laughter, waves crashing and a bongo drum drumming. Father Lester Mackenzie, of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Laguna Beach, and Laguna Niguel Stake Young Men's President, Bryan Thacker, shared messages of inclusion as they encouraged the youth to step up to be like Christ. Sparklers, glow sticks, and calendars were passed out to the youth with the hope that they will Light the World with 25 acts of service in 25 days.

The teachings of Jesus Christ show us a pattern of service for our lives. Apply these 25 teachings over the 25 days of Christmas to brighten the world around you. These calendars can be found at Mormon.org.

Service Saturday started off with a bang, as the Relief Society met for “It’s The Little Things” workshop and service. Attendees enjoyed a delicious breakfast while they visited with one another, followed by an introduction of the workshops & workshop leaders and an inspiring message by President Davis.

“Today was meant to be a gift to the wonderful women of our Stake! We love our sisters so much and feel happy to be able to serve them. Each workshop was amazing with skilled presenters and President Davis left us with a powerful message of how Little Things can make such a difference in our lives,” reflected Stake Relief Society President, Beth Garlock.

Jenny Evans demonstrated how to make caramel and delivered some fun and encouraging messages to share with friends to go along with these wonderful treats. The sisters savored the caramel and apple samples created by Jenny. Click here for recipe

Brooke Reynolds taught how being prepared for emergencies can ease the fear that often goes along with them. She provided easy and do-able directions for action to take 3 minutes, 3 hours, 3 weeks and 3 months following an emergency. Click here for handouts

Kristen Murray presented the final workshop where she gave encouraging advice for the relationships in our lives. Particularly important was the instruction participants were given on treating their own selves with a love that parallels the love of our Savior. Self-compassion is not selfishness. The sisters that attended donated over 75 pairs of denim pants that will be taken to an orphanage in Mexico. The children will be so excited since they just started allowing the youth to wear jeans! It truly was an edifying and uplifting morning.

The day was not done! Laguna Niguel Stake partnered with Mission Lutheran Church and St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in gathering donations for Orangewood Home in their effort to help kids that are phasing out of the foster care system and susceptible to human trafficking. Groceries, toiletries and school supplies were gathered and collected as members of the Laguna Niguel Stake and residents of the community generously dropped off goods at the LDS Alicia Building.

Laguna Niguel Mayor Pro Tem Elaine Gennawey, along with Aliso Viejo Mayor Pro Tem Phil Tsunoda and Council Member Bill Phillips supported the donation drive by attending and dropping off supplies.

The churches continue to look forward in working together to enhance the local communities.

On September 21, 2017, a special "Human Trafficking Town Hall" was held at the LDS Church Alicia Building located in Laguna Niguel, California. The event was spearheaded by Mayor Pro Tem Elaine Gennawey of the City of Laguna Niguel and a local interfaith group led by Monsignor John Urell of St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Pastor Bill Snyder of Mission Lutheran Church, and President Rick Lamprecht, 1st Counselor in the Laguna Niguel Stake Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The town hall speakers included Kelly Manley, Orange County Deputy District Attorney for Human Trafficking & Exploitation, Sgt. Juan Reveles of the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force, Tracey Priest, a Senior Social Worker, Kirsten Vital, Superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District, Jim Carson, Program Manager for the Orangewood Foundation, and Oree Freeman, a human trafficking survivor.

Human trafficking, the modern day term ascribed to human slavery, has emerged on the world stage as arguably the most despicable crime of the 21st century. Human slavery traces its origins as far back as Mesopotamia, one of the first recorded civilizations in history. Human trafficking encompasses both forced labor and sexual exploitation for commercial gain. As recent as February of 2017, Allen Cone of United Press International cited that, "In 2016, human trafficking in the United States rose 35.7 percent from the previous year, according to data from the National Human Trafficking Hotline." The Hotline launched in 2013 by the Polaris Project, a non-profit, non-governmental organization formed in 2002, was created to help the victims of the growing human trafficking epidemic in the US. By simply texting "BeFree" (233733), victims and captives can quickly and directly send a message that helps Polaris gather information and coordinate rescue with law enforcement. The hotline fielded a total of 26,727 calls last year.

According to the latest worldwide statistics provided by the International Labor Organization (ILO), there are an estimated 21 million victims trapped in some form of human slavery. While the worldwide statistics are staggering, in the US, California was the No.1 state for human trafficking with 1,323 cases followed by Texas with 670 and Florida with 550. Within Orange County, California, an affluent and conservative leaning county in Southern California, human trafficking is an increasingly booming and lucrative business. In the O.C., sex traffickers can expect to make double the income from forced sexual labor when compared to neighboring Los Angeles and San Diego Counties. Approximately 80 percent of the victims are transported to the area to meet the growing demand for services as opposed to Los Angeles and San Diego where victims are mostly local residents.

Orange County attendees were deeply troubled by the statistical information shared by the various panelists. In California, 43% of the sex trafficking victims are minors, 63% are minors when first prostituted, 48% are known to be sexually abused, 58% are runaways, and 71% are recruited by someone they know like a boyfriend, friend, or family member. Although the highest instances of human trafficking occur among girls touched by the foster care system, or who are living in underprivileged, broken, or troubled homes, increasingly girls from all social and economic demographics are being lured into this brutal world through social media, manipulation, false promises of love and security, modeling jobs, gifts, and offerings of safe harbor from unhappy, or abusive homes.

The most poignant moment of the evening occurred when Oree Freeman shared her story as an 11-year-old victim of sex trafficking. Audible gasps were heard in the audience as Oree recounted stories of the sex quotas that forced her to service as many as 15-20 sex patrons a night, and the heart breaking brand marking her as property and a sex slave at the tender age of 12. Sickened and saddened, many town hall attendants wondered what they could do to stop these horrifying, psychologically damaging crimes from happening in their community. Oree suggested that if you observe a girl that looks like they’re in trouble, they probably are in trouble, and counseled the audience to simply ask them if they are okay. Three simple words-- “Are you okay?” These words won’t end human trafficking in our communities, or even start to right the devastating effects of sex trafficking upon victims and families, but they might just start the conversation. They might convince one hopeless victim that someone cares. They might empower one victim with courage to reach out for help. Now imagine if hundreds and thousands of concerned citizens asked that simple question, every month, every day, every hour? The reality remains that victims of sex trafficking crimes are far from “okay,” but with community vigilance, with time, with extensive counseling, and with care, perhaps they might be “okay” one day in the future.

Seminary Kicks Off!

The seminary program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a four-year religious education program for youth. Each year there is a scripture focus whether it be the Book of Mormon, The Old Testament, The New Testament or The Doctrine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. For the 2017-18 school year, the youth will be studying The Book of Mormon.

Students generally attend seminary each morning for a 45-minute class prior to school starting, so it makes for an early start to the day! These dedicated young men and women have placed a priority on their spiritual growth. Not only do they attend class, but they read scriptures on their own time so that they will have completed reading The Book of Mormon by the end of the school year. Their committed teachers volunteer their time to get up each morning prepared with a lesson that will help shape and guide these youth. We are so thankful for the examples of the seminary students and teachers. Have a great year!

Trek 2017 "Prepare the Way"

On June 27, 2017, 209 youth and 80 adults traveled from the Laguna Niguel Stake Center to south central Wyoming to participate in a Pioneer Trek experience for youth conference that will not be forgotten.

In November 2016, the stake presidency had strong impressions that youth conference should be changed from a previously planned trip to a pioneer trek where the Mormon Pioneers walked back in the mid-1800s. The decision was not made casually.

As the day arrived, it was not met without challenges as the arrival time was pushed back due to bus issues. Word spread of the changed time and the trekkers arrived with a positive feeling and attitude as the Stake Relief Society provided a potato bar for the youth as they arrived and socialized before the kickoff took place.

Bryan Thacker, trek Trail Boss, led the kickoff as President Davis (Laguna Niguel Stake President) gave a welcome message with a pioneer story. The youth were introduced to their Mas and Pas and their trek families that they would belong to on this journey. Following introduction activities, the busses began to load with three or four families per bus along with a Bus Captain and Food Captain. The Chuck Wagon crew had done a great job making sure there was plenty of food on each bus while Chris and Sharla Marocchi, and their helpers, made sure there were fun activities for the long distance travel.

An unplanned delay along the way led to a stop at the St. George temple grounds at 4:30am where temple security opened the Visitor’s Center so the travelers could stretch their legs and use the restroom. Trek families were able to gather as President Lamprecht (member of the Laguna Niguel Stake Presidency) offered a prayer of gratitude to the Lord and asked for guidance going forward.

The journey took longer than expected as the busses continued to be plagued with mechanical issues. All experienced miracles, as busses were fixed and added, but more important, the youth and leaders took this time to enjoy one another’s company and keep spirits high.

Trekkers arrived at Cherry Creek Campground near Martin’s Cove with the final bus pulling in at 11:30 Wednesday night, 12 hours later than planned, but the Chuck Wagon Crew had made a wonderful dinner and everyone was excited for the next day.

Thursday morning began on the bank of the Sweetwater River as President Lamprecht taught the group about what happened to the Martin Company and to understand the chronology of events they experienced prior to their being rescued and the heroic efforts of the rescuers at the river. As the group crossed the river over a bridge youth participants Kaylee Hepburn, Noah Jorgensen and Zach Graf offered their testimonies through music and word, respectively.

The companies then stopped at the entrance to Martin’s Cove called the Dan Jones Amphitheater where Tyler Hepburn, Hannah Eyre and Dorje Pradhan treated the group to beautiful music and President Davis taught about the members of the Martin Company who had stayed and suffered there. President Davis then invited everyone to kneel and offered a prayer and exercised his Priesthood keys to bestow a powerful blessing on the youth. The group left, and was able to reflect on this powerful spiritual experience while they took a silent 90-minute walk through the rest of Martin’s Cove.

The next stop was over the Sweetwater River using the Veil Crossing Bridge, which was built to commemorate a time when temple work was done for the members of the Willie and Martin Handcart Companies. President Ostergar (member of the Laguna Niguel Stake Presidency) talked to the youth and leaders about the importance of love, family, family history work and temples.

The evening ended after traveling an hour’s distance to the next site called Sixth Crossing where the pioneers had crossed the Sweetwater River for the sixth time. After touring the Visitor’s Center, the Chuck Wagon Crew fixed another delicious dinner, and everyone enjoyed some very fun square dancing led by the senior missionaries stationed at Sixth Crossing.

Friday morning began with an early and cold 5am wake-up call, with trekkers on the trail by 7:30am. Elder Shugart led the group throughout the day telling pioneer stories and reminding everyone what unusually beautiful and moderate weather they were enjoying.

Bishop Bryan Smith told the story of Jens and Elsie Nielson, who were part of the Willie Company. Peter and Darin Nielson created a reenactment of Elsie lifting her husband, Jens, into the handcart and pulling him until the rescuers came, which saved his life. Unable to hold back, kids from Peter and Darin’s Trek family rushed down the hillside to help her pull the cart.

The next stop was View Ridge which helped the group understand how the pioneers must have felt seeing how difficult the Rocky Ridge was just ahead in the distance (Salt Lake Valley still 300 miles away), running out of food and not knowing if the rescuers were close.

The time came for the men’s callout and women’s pull. Once the men were out of sight, the Mas gathered their girls and talked with them about what it means to be a strong and faithful woman and that sometimes women need to pull heavy loads alone in life. Bishop Tyson Weaver, simultaneously, was talking to the men and boys about the need to respect and love the women in their lives. The men then lined both sides of the trail and sang The Spirit of God, as the women pulled the carts up the trail.

Back together, the group cooled off their feet at a small crossing of the Sweetwater River and continued on to the main crossing which turned into a much needed water party with a lot of playing around and a very welcome break.

The final activity at the Sixth Crossing location was a Pioneer Concert with youth singing and playing musical instruments presenting anything from hymns to satirical tunes poking fun of bus problems.

With equipment and camp cleaned up, the 90-minute drive to Rock Creek Hollow commenced. Rock Creek Hollow is an idyllic spot on the Rock Creek where the Willie Company camped on October 23rd and 24th in 1856 after a grueling handcart pull in freezing and blizzard conditions. Soon after they arrived at camp, 15 pioneers ranging in age from six to 67 died and were buried in a common gravesite, which today is fenced off and has a memorial next to it.

Our group entered this area in a reverent manner and President Davis welcomed everyone to the final devotional meeting of Trek. He then went on to recount stories of those who perished there, and the sacrifices the pioneers made to serve others and follow the prophet and the Lord.

He then explained that there are many places in the world that are “sacred” because what had occurred there but that this spot had been declared ‘hallowed’ ground by President Gordon B. Hinckley (prophet of the church.) ‘Hallowed’ because the Savior had personally visited this place while assisting those pioneers who were giving their very lives during those final moments of sacrifice.

The youth then gathered with their Trek families and had a chance to be alone to read letters from home. The Spirit was felt strongly this final night of Trek, and for many, the moments at Rock Creek Hollow were the most impactful because of the hallowed nature of the area. These memories are a sweet reminder of God’s love for us and how He desires to teach and strengthen us.

The drive back home was mostly uneventful, with a fun stop at a water park in Las Vegas, and a few warm busses.

Trek was an opportunity to learn of the past, better understand who we truly are through the memory of pioneers who had to learn the same thing, and see what God wants us to become as we prepare for future service and leadership opportunities.

We are grateful to the leaders of the Laguna Niguel Stake, the Trek committee crews, and particularly to the youth who came on Trek with open hearts and full of faith, all of which made this Pioneer Trek 2017 a memorable and testimony building experience.
