Artists Rules and Tips
Impromptu Art Gallery
For three nights, 100+ creators will exhibit their completed chalk murals for a pop-up installation starting on Dec. 6-8th. Artists have a special ability to bring to life a completely unique holiday experience that you can’t find anywhere else. Each year, the event curates a completely new celebration that is fun for the entire family. (Check out some of last year’s submissions below.)
There is no artist entry fee. Artist registration closed on November 17th.
Light the World
Brought to you by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Christmas Chalk Walk 2024 will consist of an in-person walk-through one evening and will be a drive-thru format for the other two nights, all of which will be held at our Aliso Viejo church building (22851 Aliso Creek Road, Aliso Viejo). All artwork will be on display from Friday-Sunday, December 6-8.
In-Person Friday Night
The in-person event will be held on on Friday, Dec. 6th from 5-8pm. All the artwork will be ready and on display during the live event. Please come and connect with other artists and community members among live music and delicious cinnamon rolls. Friday night only, there will also be a living nativity scene with live animals, including a camel.
Drive-Thru Saturday and Sunday Nights
December 7-8 will be a drive-thru format from 5-8 PM. As community members sit comfortably in their cars, they will be able to view all of the finished chalk creations displayed on large easels. As they drive through the lighted tunnels, they will hear inspirational Christmas messages and music, giving everyone the chance to take in the entire moment and let it sink in.
Event Details
Thank you to those artists who have registered to participate in the 2024 Christmas Chalk Walk. Here are some helpful details…
There is no registration fee.
Free professional-grade chalk will be provided for all artists. We will be using boxes of 12-count water-based pastel chalk. One box will be provided per registered artist.
Free black painted plywood will also be provided for all chalk drawings. Please note the plywood is very large measuring at 8 feet long by 4 feet wide. Once chalked, each plywood creation will be displayed horizontally (landscape) on a large easel.
Chalk art is only to be produced on designated 8' x 4' boards boards and must be horizontal (landscape) orientation. Art will be displayed on wooden easels for easier viewing from cars.
Art must be Christmas themed–both religious and secular art is allowed.
Your artwork must only include chalk.
The art created must be suitable for public and family viewing (no nude or lewd work). Only uplifting Christmas-related text is acceptable in the design. For example, no words or symbols intended as political statements may appear within the art.
You are welcome to pick up the plywood ahead of time to chalk your drawing at home. Please note: The plywood is very large and requires a big truck/van to transport. You will be responsible for picking up and delivering the plywood back to the Chalk Walk. If you are interested in picking up your plywood ahead of time, please contact Amy Ossala at amyossola@cox.net
Thursday, December 5th – artist check-in will begin at 10am and end for the day at 3pm. It will continue Friday, December 6th starting at 10am and will end at 3pm. Artists may either bring their chalk drawings completed at that time or they may chalk Friday on site. All completed work must be done by December 6th at 3pm.
Spectators will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite art on our website. This is the “People’s Choice Award".” Finalists will be recognized and will receive a cash prize.
Saturday and Sunday, the 7th and the 8th (5pm-8pm) will be a drive-thru format.
Christmas Chalk Walk Committee (CCW) reserves the right to refuse, stop or eliminate objectionable material. The CCW Committee’s opinion will be final. If artists have questions about their art, it is recommended they confer with the Committee Chairs that will be present throughout the event.
